Position : Underwriting Manager

Job Description :
To efficiently develop interpersonal relationship and supervise the underwriting division to achieve the overall operations strategy. Improve oversight in the department, ensure proper reporting structure within the department and efficiency in the department.
Principle Accountabilities :

  • Overseeing the activities of underwriting and reinsurance in General, Medical and Group Life Departments in the Business.
  • Ensure that only quality business is accepted into the company at acceptable rates and are adequately covered through reinsurance programs.
  • Preparing and maintaining up to date underwriting and reinsurance manuals.
  • Supervision, appraisal, training, and development of staff in the Division.
  • Ensuring timely preparation of management reports.
  • Spearheading product development and continuously review the performance of accounts and products and enhance existing products to make them relevant to changing needs and development of new products.
  • Assist business development in acquiring new business and coordinating with client service team in maintaining high retention levels
  • Participate in reinsurance placement arrangement/negotiations to ensure the portfolio has adequate and cost-effective reinsurance programs.
  • Arrange facultative placement with approved companies for any risk beyond the Company retention.
  • Appoint Service Providers i.e., Surveyors, etc.
  • Enforce credit control policy and ensure that premiums are settled within defined timelines
  • Carry out periodic risk surveys and ensure implementation of the recommendations.
  • Set and ensure all the staff members comply with strict standards of u/w and documentation before issuing cover.
  • Carry out Appraisal, training, and development of staff in the Department.
  • Allocate, supervise, and monitor workflow in the department
  • Participate in Audit and maintain a sound risk environment
  • Ensure quality data is sitting in our core systems
  • Participate in the planning refocusing for the department and the organization at large.

Relationships :

  • Reporting to : Head of Underwriting and Customer Service.

Qualifications :

  • A good University degree preferably business related.
  • Professional Qualification such as ACII or equivalent.

  • 5 years work experience in underwriting related fields.
